An easy, satisfying fall dessert featuring tart and sweet apples topped with a buttery oat crisp and drizzled with salted caramel. Perfect for cozy gatherings and quick to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced about 1/4-inch thick
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly in a single layer with slight overlap.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Mix well.
  5. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or two forks until pea-sized butter pieces are coated in the flour mixture.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple layer without pressing down.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and apples are bubbling at the edges.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes.
  9. Drizzle caramel sauce over the warm apple crisp and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
  10. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Keep butter cold for a crumbly topping. If topping browns too quickly, tent with foil halfway through baking. Add extra lemon juice or a splash of water if apples seem dry. For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with almond flour. For vegan, use dairy-free butter and vegan caramel sauce. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Leftovers keep up to 3 days refrigerated and reheat in oven at 325°F for 15 minutes.
