A warm, comforting holiday punch made with apple cider, bourbon, and aromatic spices. This easy slow-cooker recipe balances sweetness with depth, perfect for Friendsgiving or cozy winter nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 gallon (3.78 liters) apple cider (cloudy/unpasteurized preferred)
  • 1.5 cups (355 ml) bourbon or apple brandy
  • 1 large knob (approx. 3 inches) fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 3 large cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 2 large oranges, sliced into rounds
  • 0.5 cup (100g) brown sugar (optional, to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Wash oranges thoroughly and slice into 0.5-inch rounds, removing seeds. Peel ginger and slice into thin coins or rough chunks.
  2. Pour the gallon of apple cider into a slow cooker or large stockpot.
  3. Add the sliced oranges, ginger, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and brown sugar (if using) to the cider.
  4. If using a stovetop, bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Do not boil. If using a slow cooker, set to Low.
  5. Let the mixture heat up for about 30 minutes, then simmer for 1-2 hours to allow spices to steep. Stir occasionally.
  6. Turn off the heat. Stir in the bourbon or apple brandy and vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness or alcohol strength as needed.
  7. Ladle into mugs and garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick or orange slice. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Do not boil the alcohol after adding it, as heat will cause it to evaporate. For parties, consider keeping the alcohol separate and adding it to individual mugs to control strength. The non-alcoholic base can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. If using a slow cooker, keep on ‘Warm’ setting and do not exceed 4 hours to prevent bitter flavors from the rinds.
