A forgiving, fast, and delicious fall dessert featuring tart and sweet apples topped with a crunchy oat crumble and drizzled with creamy salted caramel sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6–7 large apples (mixed tart and sweet, e.g., Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup good-quality salted caramel sauce
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream (optional, for thinning caramel)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, 2 tablespoons flour, and granulated sugar until evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Add cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and cut in using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized clumps.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples and press down gently.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and drizzle salted caramel sauce evenly over the hot topping. If needed, microwave caramel briefly to loosen.
  9. Return to oven and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and caramel is bubbling.
  10. Cool for 10-15 minutes before serving to allow juices to thicken.

Notes

Keep butter cold for a flaky texture. Do not use Red Delicious apples as they turn mushy. Let the crisp cool for 15 minutes before serving to prevent a soupy consistency. Can be made gluten-free by using GF flour blend and certified GF oats. Can be made vegan by using dairy-free butter and caramel.
