This recipe features hot dogs sliced lengthwise to create crispy edges while remaining juicy inside, basted with butter for a golden caramelized finish. Perfect for quick, flavorful grilling sessions that turn a simple hot dog into a crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Hot dogs (all-beef preferred, e.g., Nathan’s or Ball Park)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Hot dog buns, fresh and soft
  • Optional toppings: yellow mustard, ketchup, relish, diced onions, pickle slices
  • Optional seasonings: pinch of smoked paprika or garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (around 375°F/190°C).
  2. Spread softened unsalted butter evenly over each hot dog.
  3. Using a sharp knife, slice each hot dog lengthwise down the middle, stopping about 1/4 inch (6 mm) from the bottom to keep it hinged, creating a butterfly cut.
  4. Place the hot dogs on the grill, cut side down, and grill for 3-4 minutes until the edges are golden and crispy.
  5. Flip the hot dogs carefully using tongs and grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes until browned and heated through.
  6. Baste again with butter during grilling if desired for extra richness and crispiness.
  7. Toast the buns on the grill cut side down for about 1 minute until lightly browned and warm.
  8. Assemble the hot dogs in the buns and add your favorite toppings.

Notes

Do not poke holes in the hot dogs to prevent drying out. Keep a spray bottle of water nearby to control flare-ups caused by dripping butter. Use softened butter for easy spreading and caramelization. Toast buns just before serving to avoid sogginess. For dairy-free versions, substitute butter with olive oil or vegan butter alternatives.
