Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups (345g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground clove (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¼ cups (250g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ⅓ cup (65g) granulated sugar (for cinnamon-sugar coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for cinnamon-sugar coating)
  • 4 ounces (115g) cream cheese, softened
  • 4 tablespoons (56g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 to 1 ½ cups (120-180g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined and smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until incorporated. Avoid overmixing.
  6. In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for the coating.
  7. Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, form dough balls about 1 ½ inches in diameter. Roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
  8. Place the coated dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until edges are golden and cracked but centers still look slightly soft.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. To make the cream cheese frosting, beat softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
  12. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, beating until fluffy and spreadable. Adjust powdered sugar to desired sweetness and consistency.
  13. Once cookies are completely cool, spread a generous dollop of cream cheese frosting on top. Optionally, sprinkle extra cinnamon sugar or a pinch of cinnamon on the frosting.

Notes

Use softened butter (not melted) for best texture. Avoid overmixing dry ingredients to keep cookies tender. Chill dough for 15 minutes if sticky. Frost only when cookies are completely cool to prevent melting. Baking time varies slightly for mini cookies (8-9 minutes).
