A nostalgic and crispy hybrid of fried funnel cake and Oreos, capturing the magic of a state fair treat with a crunchy chocolate twist. Perfect for quick, easy, and crowd-pleasing desserts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • About 15 Oreos, halved
  • About 4 cups (1 liter) vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Pour vegetable oil into a large deep skillet or Dutch oven to a depth of about 2 inches (5 cm). Heat over medium heat until oil reaches 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to check. This takes about 10-15 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until fluffy. Add the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  4. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whisking gently until just combined. The batter should be thick but pourable with some lumps.
  5. Gently fold in the halved Oreos, being careful not to crush them.
  6. Using a spoon or small ladle, pour ribbons of batter into the hot oil in a random circular motion, mimicking a funnel cake shape. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Flip carefully with a slotted spoon.
  7. Remove the fried funnel cake from oil and place on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet to drain excess oil and keep crisp.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar while still warm and serve immediately. Optional: add chocolate syrup or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Maintain oil temperature between 350°F and 375°F for best results. Avoid overcrowding the pan to prevent temperature drops. Gently fold Oreos to keep distinct pieces. Drain on a cooling rack to keep crispness. Reheat leftovers in a toaster oven or conventional oven to restore crispness; avoid microwaving.
