Crispy Mummy Hot Dogs: 3-Step Crescent Roll Halloween Recipe

Crispy Mummy Hot Dogs - featured image

A spooky and delicious Halloween treat featuring hot dogs wrapped in flaky crescent roll dough with cheese and poppy seed eyes. These crispy mummies are quick to make, kid-friendly, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Standard beef or turkey hot dogs
  • 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Poppy seeds (for eyes)
  • Yellow mustard (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Slice hot dogs lengthwise, leaving about an inch at the end intact to create a ‘book’ shape. Place a strip of cheddar cheese inside the slit and roll the hot dog back up.
  3. Unroll crescent dough, press seams together to form a single sheet, and cut into 1-inch wide strips. You will need two strips per hot dog.
  4. Wrap the dough strips tightly around each hot dog, leaving small gaps to mimic mummy bandages. Leave the top end exposed for the head and tuck the dough end under the hot dog to secure.
  5. Place two poppy seeds on the exposed head of each mummy for eyes, pressing gently so they stick.
  6. Brush the dough lightly with the egg wash mixture to ensure a golden-brown finish.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the dough is golden brown and puffed up. Keep an eye on them after 10 minutes to prevent burning.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes to allow the cheese to set. Serve warm with mustard on the side.

Notes

Ensure hot dogs are dry before wrapping to prevent dough from sliding. Keep dough cold until baking. If edges brown too quickly, tent with aluminum foil. Can be assembled and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350°F to maintain crispiness.
