  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 ยฝ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ยพ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process recommended)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ยฝ teaspoon salt
  • ยฝ teaspoon baking powder
  • ยฝ cup chocolate chips (optional)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ยฝ cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 23 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 large orange, zested
  • 12 teaspoons orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease an 8×8 inch baking pan and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk melted butter and granulated sugar until resembling wet sand.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition until pale and thickened. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients with a rubber spatula until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs.
  8. Cool brownies in pan on a wire rack for 30 minutes, then lift out using parchment and cool completely.
  9. While brownies cool, beat softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  10. Add vanilla and orange zest. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, beating on low then medium-high until fluffy.
  11. Adjust consistency with orange juice if needed.
  12. Spread frosting over cooled brownies and cut into squares.

Notes

Ensure eggs are at room temperature to prevent curdling. Do not overbake; the toothpick should have moist crumbs. Cool brownies completely before frosting to prevent melting. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. For dairy-free, use vegan butter and cream cheese alternatives.
