  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter (softened)
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 large Egg Yolks
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • Gel Food Coloring (for decorating)
  • Decorating Icing or Royal Icing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
  2. Add the egg yolks and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until fully combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Divide the dough into two portions, flatten into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out one disk of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
  8. Use a turkey-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes and place them on baking sheets, leaving 1 inch between them.
  9. Add color to the feathers using gel food coloring if desired.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened but not melted. Chill dough thoroughly to prevent spreading. Use gel food coloring instead of liquid to maintain dough consistency. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container with a piece of bread to keep them soft.
